As a long-term substitute, I was responsible for teaching math and science to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at a private middle school. I was also the homeroom teacher for the 6th graders, who were experiencing block schedule for the first time and needed assistance with the transition from single-classroom learning to multi-classroom learning. My math and science curriculum was provided by the teacher of record and I was expected to adapt it as needed. I was to create the homeroom lessons myself. My teaching style relies heavily on explicit instruction to ensure student comprehension, formative assessments (which comes hand in hand with differentiation. I will always modify my lessons to meet my students where they are.), and modeling both the concepts being taught and positive mindsets.
As I worked through each week, I found myself developing new strategies to support learners who are resistant to help. As this was a private school, many students felt pressure to do well to "make it worth their parent's money" so to say. When I implemented more projects and games and real-world assignments many of my struggling learners were able to find a foothold without needing to explicitly accept my help.
This role truly strengthened my ability to work with students of different temperaments, and showed me how to scaffold my lessons to better support the silent strugglers.
Coming back to school after a long summer can be daunting-- especially when you are making the jump from a single class all day in 5th grade to having 7 classes a day in 6th grade. I sought to make that transition as smooth as possible by building rapport with my 6th grade students immediately. We started out the school year with a game of Jeopardy I designed that lasted several Homeroom periods and helped everyone loosen up about coming back to an educational setting that felt very foreign.
From educational review columns "Science in Action" and "Rewind" to one that goes over topics that would be broached in the coming months "Curious Minds" or SEL topics in "Be The Change" and "Get To Know YOU" or even the silly column "Chaos Corner", there was something for everyone. Students broke into groups and used a buzzer website to simulate a real Jeopardy game.
Students were all given a sheet of paper that had part of a mural on it. Together, every middle school student was able to color part of this large piece of art together. While coloring, we discussed what it means to have and spread hope within our community as well as how we can identify and help those who may need more support.
I believe that a core part of learning is repetition, and my teaching styles reflect that. I dedicated time each lesson to go over the previous day's lesson before we began the new one, gave a preview for the next day's lesson at the end of the lecture, and I always gave this interactive review sheet a week before any test. Students got the opportunity to study these notes up to the minute the test started. Students also had the opportunity to create a 3"x5" note card reference sheet for all tests. I don't believe that accommodation should be limited to those who have a doctor's note already. Learning is not just about memorizing information for the next test, but about being able to interpret and explain information in different contexts.
Students were given a bag of rubber bands, a watermelon, and plenty of PPE with the simple instructions: make it explode. We had just spent a week learning about potential and kinetic energy and how they are stored and released. Now, they had the opportunity to experience it before their very eyes. They were expected to assign roles within their groups, monitor each other, and ensure everyone was completing tasks properly (there are no make-ups!)
7th grade students were tasked with finding a way to make a paperclip, row of staples, and a penny (separately or all at once, depending on how ambitious they felt!) float for at least 15 seconds. We used this lesson to discuss forming and revising a hypothesis, surface area, surface tension, and how to properly observe an experiment to better conduct your own.
The outcome was a resounding success with students identifying the failure points in other students builds and correcting it in their own.
I encouraged self regulation when the frustration of not succeeding the first time got to be too much and saw many students step up to help their peers use their coping skills.
