Reindeer Dress-Up Day at school.
Being a Math Interventionist meant working closely with students in grades 3-8 to provide targeted academic support through one-on-one sessions, small group instruction (up to 7 students), and push-in classroom support. My role required designing personalized lesson plans and activities that addressed diverse learning needs, with a special focus on students facing academic challenges, language barriers, or those with IEPs and 504 plans. I frequently adapted my approach in real-time, using a mix of whiteboard modeling, tactile tools, and structured worksheets to keep students engaged and build both skills and confidence.
As I got to know my students, I developed the ability to assess their gaps in understanding and tailor my instruction accordingly. I also prioritized relationship building and creating a safe and supportive space for students who often arrived frustrated or anxious about math.
This role strengthened my communication, curriculum development, and management skills. It also deepened my understanding of how academic support and emotional regulation can so strongly intertwine in a learning environment.
Here you can see some of the whiteboards created in class for students to utilize during our sessions. These whiteboards would also be translated to special worksheets that assisted students in learning the steps for completing complex math topics, some of which can be seen below.
Here you can see 3 goals chosen from a student's learning plan and the results of them coming to me 3 times a week for 45 minute one-on-one sessions while still attending all mainstream math classes (completing the modified work I provided, though). This student was typically highly motivated, very positive, and was not upset to be receiving extra support. On top of support from myself and their teacher, their peers were intrinsically motivated to provide assistance whenever possible. I also provided training for a few select peers to allow them to better help this student. We witnessed impressive growth in each 10 week snapshot of intervention and were able to help this student gain over 3 grade levels of math across the 25 weeks worked with them.
